College Theological Society

Established 1830

The Theo

The College Theological Society, better known as the Theo, dates back to 1830. It is one of the three oldest Trinity societies, and the oldest student–led college theological society in the world. We originally existed to serve one gender and one religious denomination only. Today, we have a wide and varied membership across campus and welcome people of all gender expressions, sexual orientations, faiths and none.

We meet for talks, panels and group discussions from academics, and experts in their field to discuss theological topics including spirituality, ethics, the climate crisis, faith, social justice, and human rights. The urgency of understanding and engaging with these subjects is increasingly recognised by society and the Theo plays an important role in fostering the college community’s collective capacity to relate to these issues with wisdom and compassion. We are committed to hearing YOUR voice, and want to know your opinions! Our annual paper competition offers students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, the opportunity to write a 3,000 word paper on a topic of their choice related to theology or the study of religion. Each student presents their paper to the society before being entered for the chance to win our prestigious Kelly Prize for Excellence or the Philips prize for Oration.

The GMB

The Theo’s Monday evening events are held in the Chamber of the Graduates' Memorial Building (GMB) and Wednesdays we meet at the top of the building, in the Bram Stoker room, for our Library Lunchtimes. This is an excellent space to meet and chat with people on campus or take out a book from our ever expanding library. The Theo is working hard to encourage an environment of inclusion and equality for all but regretfully, due to the age and current architectural layout of the GMB, the Bram Stoker is currently inaccessible to wheelchair users or those who are unable to negotiate multiple flights of stairs. If you are a member and would like to borrow a book please contact the Hon. Librarian by email and they will do their best to assist you. Monday evening events in the Chamber are accessible. Please visit the building’s accessibility profile, created by the Trinity disability Service more information.
